Character and principal aims
The Polish Economic Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Ekonomiczne, PTE) is an independent national association of economists. It was established in 1945 and continues the tradition of the Warsaw Association of Economists and Statisticians and Economic Societies operating in Cracow, Poznan and Lvov before World War II.
At present the Society has 6000 ordinary members and about 220 supporting members (firms, financial institutions, banks). It consists of 24 autonomous regional Branches, whose activities are co-ordinated by the National Board. The Polish Economic Society is a member of the International Economic Association and maintains broad international contacts. The Society's principle aim is to contribute by its activities to the development of economic thought and culture in Polish society.
This is reflected in the following statutory objectives:

  • To disseminate economic ideas and support the creation of favourable conditions for the development of the science of economics and the presentation of their achievements.
  • To promote economic knowledge and dissemination of economic culture in society.
  • To enhance the qualifications of economists in their various areas of professional speciality.
  • To initiate and support activities aimed at social, economic and regional development of the country in an environmentally friendly manner.
  • To seek the integration of economists representing academic science as well as business activities.

Appeal to economists of the Polish origin, living permamently abroad

How are these objectives pursued?
The objectives of the Polish Economic Society are pursued primarily by means of:
  • scientific conferences (national and international), symposia, congresses (The First National Congress of Economists and Lawyers was organised in 1887 in Cracow, The 8th Congress of Polish Economists was held in November 2007 in Warsaw);
  • research projects (under the auspices of the Scientific Council of PTE) including reviews and appraisals of the economic situation of the country and special annual reports devoted to selected problems of the economic development of Poland;
  • training programmes (seminars, courses, trainings and lectures);
  • consulting, advisory and information activities related to social and economic issues;
  • organising post-secondary schools and colleges with an economic profile (i.e. College of Management and Finance in Bydgoszcz, College "Oeconomicus" in Szczecin, Malopolska School of Economies in Tarnow);
  • publishing activities, including publication of scientific journals, bulletins as well as theoretical and professional publications;
  • organising an annual National Economic Contest for high school students (in co-operation with the Ministry of National Education).
Activities of the Society are focused both on current issues of the Polish economy and its perspectives (including problems related to integration with the European Union), and pertinent theoretical issues of economics.
